on June 1 2010

Do game makers game differently?  In this episode of Irrational Behavior we ask the team if they are able to turn off their critical filters and play the part of consumer.  From the untold developer chatter during lobby sessions in the latest multiplayer games to conquering  great single player experiences, how do we play and what do we think.  We also ask the team on games that influenced them in their roles and impacted the games they helped create.

  • Part 1: Team Deathmatch
  • Part 2: Appetite for Deconstruction

I love these podcasts – #1 is so far my favorite.

Small request: can you update the podcast art to be square?

The embedded art in the MP3 is square. What art would you like square?

    Great podcast.

I work in the industry and have trouble with this. I think the games that I tend to be able to let go with are the ones that make it easier to suspend disbelief and enter a ‘flow’ state. If the world and characters are believable, the mechanics are consistent, and the difficulty of challenges is roughly equal to my ability to complete them, I tend to just switch off and enjoy.

I guess it’s like CG in movies: Why is it that when I watch the Star Wars prequels I’m constantly aware of the CG, but when I watch Lord of the Rings or Avatar I’m thinking about the characters, and what’s going on in the story.

I’d add that I think a lot of gamers are sub-consciously de-constructing games as they’re playing them anyway. A lot of the fun that comes from playing games is trying to find optimal strategies, so gamers will always be trying to learn and master your game systems. Maybe the difference is that they’re not always aware of it.

It’s cool to see that to be a game designer you do not have to be a super-analytical gamer to make games, you just have to truly love games.

They would have to game differently. Like a Hollywood director watches a movie, would notice the camera angles, lighting in a movie…whilst the rest of us are going hell yeah, wicked movie. Why wouldn’t it be the same for a video game. IMO anyway.

That S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mod sounds awesome! That’s the kind of immersive experience that I adore in games.

I have to admit that the story about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Redux mod was very intense. You know you’re playing a great game when something in it provokes emotion even after you’re done playing it.
Love, love, love these podcasts! I can’t wait until next month’s!

Either move your rig away from the aquarium… or buy a volcano. It’ll cut down on the bubbling noises. Added bonus: brownies
