Creative people have no shortage of media through which to express their ideas, and they often move from one to another before they find the one that most speaks to them. Kieron Gillen had a long and successful career as a game journalist, including founding the popular PC game blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Now, he has largely put journalism behind him and has signed an agreement to write comic books exclusively for Marvel, following his respected work on Marvel’s Thor and the Image-published Phonogram.
In the third episode of Irrational Interviews, Gillen joins Irrational’s Ken Levine and Chris Remo to talk about how creative works can convey the fears, preoccupations, and passions of their makers. They discuss the similarities (and differences) between comics and games, and how it becomes more difficult for creators to perceive their works in the same way consumers see them. Also, learn what horse-faced hammer-wielding space aliens have to do with musings on humanity and divinity.

A thoroughly fascinating and enjoyable podcast. It is always a pleasure to hear such a wide-ranging and friendly discussion by such smart and creative people. “More of this!”

[…] Anyone remember Keiran Gillon? I’m told he used to be a writer for this site, before he upped and left to start some career writing for Whizzer & Chips or something. Well, after an age of silence his name has resurfaced, being interviewed on the Irrational Interviews podcast. […]

Good to hear you on a podcast again, Chris. I shit myself when I heard, “And I’m Chris Remo.” Great job all around. Can we expect to hear you on Irrational Behavior as well? I would lose my mind.

Good stuff. I like that you kept in the “[Stomp. Stomp. Stomp.] Honey, I’m doing a podcast.”
I don’t mean to whine, but I feel that the Irrational Interviews are very fast, as if everyone in them speaks more quickly or they are cut to be tighter than, say, episodes of Irrational Behavior. (Kieron’s pretty speedy on the RPS ‘casts too.)
Thanks for sharing these. I hope to hear more soon.

I really appreciate these podcasts. This conversation with Kieron was great in that you delved into exposing your own personal issues with the art you create. Also, you guys mentioned your knowledge of movies and games has you somewhat jaded towards the overall experience as the viewer/player. I’m personally glad I don’t know about all the many processes involved into creating games like yours. The magic and mystery of BioShock is why it affects me so much emotionally. It really is cool to hear you guys go into these kinds of details. It makes me appreciate your work even more.

This was very well-produced! I especially liked the intro and outro music; that riff is stuck in my head. For those interested, the track in question is The Stein by the Happy Hollows which can be found here:

Two interesting fellows and well-guided discussion.

I love both podcast series, but this one isn’t on the Zune Marketplace. Could you go about fixing that little problem? I can use the direct RSS feed, but I don’t get the album art that way. Thanks.
Man, do I love these interviews.
