Fifteen years ago, Irrational Games got its start making PC games, and the PC gaming experience has always been near and dear to our hearts. But it’s been a long time since we released the original BioShock, and PC gamers have come to expect a lot more for their money. So it’s understandable that you might be wondering: Will BioShock Infinite treat you right? Read on to find out what’s in store for the PC version, and you be the judge.
Controls
One of the big differences between PC and console gaming is the availability of a mouse and keyboard. You expect it, so we’re happy to confirm that the PC options screens let you remap all the default action bindings, with both primary and alternate bindings available simultaneously. Speaking of mice, we’ve made sure not to alter the sensitivity of high-end gaming mice by applying artificial mouse smoothing, and you can control sensitivity or toggle mouse acceleration in the options screen.
What’s that you’re mumbling to yourself? You prefer a console controller? Don’t worry, traitor, your secret is safe with us. There are three separate controller layouts (Default, Marksman, and Retro), each of which support loads of configuration options. You can tweak aim assist, sensitivity, vibration, and look inversion. Are you a left-handed player? Go ahead and revel in your genetic superiority because all controller layouts support multiple analog-stick configurations: Default (Look on right stick, Move on left), Southpaw (opposite of Default), Legacy (for those GoldenEye fans), and Legacy Southpaw. And for those who truly yearn for an old-school feel, or who use special controllers for medical reasons, we even let you swap the left or right analog stick with the D-pad.
All UI’s in the game are controllable via either keyboard and mouse or the console controller, and you can switch back and forth between the two input paradigms without ever pausing the game.
Graphics
I know, I know. Why discuss Controls first when we all know that Graphics Options is the first place you’ll be visiting? Because patience is a virtue. And it’s worth the wait.
This time around, we’ve fully embraced widescreen gaming. With our implementation of “horizontal plus” widescreen support, the wider you go, the more you’ll see of Columbia’s gorgeous vistas. And for the true aficionado, we support multi-monitor gaming with AMD Eyefinity, NVIDIA Surround, and Matrox TripleHead2Go. You’ll also have separate controls for aspect ratio, resolution, and display mode (fullscreen, windowed, and fullscreen windowed).
We have six different graphics presets, from “Very Low” to “Ultra,” providing a wide range of quality-versus-performance options. Gamers who want to tweak those further can switch to a Custom configuration, which gives you control over anti-aliasing, texture detail, texture filtering, dynamic shadows, post-processing, light shafts, ambient occlusion, and object level of detail. Many of these options have setting levels that are only available under DX11.
That’s right—BioShock Infinite is a DX11 game. Though you only need DX10-compatible hardware to play, having a DX11 graphics card gives you access to contact-hardening dynamic shadows, diffusion depth of field, high definition ambient occlusion and optimized antialiasing. Each of these features was developed in close collaboration with AMD’s graphics experts to take maximum advantage of modern DX11 hardware.
Finally, to show off all of that glorious PC pixel-pushing power, we’re shipping with unadulterated, full-resolution textures right in the box. You may not enjoy the three-DVD install, but we hope you will appreciate the jaw-dropping detail our amazing team of artists lavished on the game.
Gaming Wherever, Whenever
So you have a sweet gaming rig at home, but what about when you’re on the road for work, taking a break between classes, or visiting your relatives? We know that you appreciate being able to bring your gaming with you and may not always have a beefy machine available. We’ve worked hard to include graphics options that scale both up and down, so you can play BioShock Infinite even on less powerful setups with integrated graphics.
Speaking of bringing your gaming with you, did I mention that the game is on Steam, with Steam Cloud support? You’ll be able to get your BioShock Infinite fix no matter where you are, and your saved progress travels with you.
Likewise, if you just bought an 80-inch TV and prefer to take your PC gaming to the couch (or is it a “love seat”?), we’ve got you covered with support for Steam’s Big Picture mode. Heck, with a wireless controller and a good insurance plan, you can even play from your Jacuzzi.

Conclusion
If I have any regrets, it’s that there are always more features that we wanted to add than we had time to implement. For example, some of the most requested PC features these days are in-game V-Sync and FOV adjustment controls. Unfortunately, given our tight sc—wait, never mind. We added those too!
Still have questions? Then send them to community@irrationalgames.com and I’ll have answers in a separate post next week!
We’re incredibly excited about the quality of BioShock Infinite on the PC platform, and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself on March 26th. Secure your copy at www.preordernow.com!

Despite the fact this doesn’t come out until the end of March I just dropped my money for it on pre-order. Nice to know it will be a quality product when it comes out.

I wish i could make a time ripple like Elizabeth and travel to March 🙂

steam? well F You! You aren’t getting my money Irrational. Would have been happy with no DRM or GFWL (like BIoshock and Bioshock 2 respectively) but the steam part makes this game worth no more than $5, if anything at all.
Have the previous 2 on PC, and specs higher than your recommended, but I would rather play this on a console than deal with the POS that steam is.
jalaman | January 15, 2013 11:58 pm
If you’re really so ignorant that you don’t use Steam then you probably couldn’t appreciate Bioshock Infinite anyway.
peeb | January 16, 2013 3:48 am
Wait, wait, wait. Someone prefers that abomination called GFWL over Steam. Didn’t know people like this existed.
tikvata | January 15, 2013 12:50 pm
What about Windows 8 support? I won’t be buying a game that when I go home will refuse to start/run…
ig.kline | January 15, 2013 1:05 pm
Windows 8 is supported!
tikvata | January 15, 2013 1:11 pm
Thanks. I was almost sure it did, but it never hurts to ask. 🙂

grigjd3 | January 16, 2013 12:32 pm
Look, I appreciate the love for PCs and I have an awesome one to play this game on, however, I have a question about DRM. When I got Bioshock for the PC, the game was made unauthorized every time I went a week without playing the game. I know Irrational is now an independent company but what’s going on with that? Are you still going with secuROM? If so, I’m not buying this game.
ig.kline | January 16, 2013 12:37 pm
Rest assured, we’re not using SecuROM!
japester | January 16, 2013 3:51 pm
To avoid any confusion, Irrational is still owned by Take-Two. They reverted to their original (way cooler) name, but their relationship is still the same, if I’m mistaken.
🙂
grigjd3 | January 16, 2013 8:57 pm
Hi ig.kline,
Thank you for allaying my fears. I had such horrible experiences with PC ports before…
That is the past however and so now I can continue to be a loyal fan. Thank you very much for considering us in that regard.
cheers,
Jason

Honestly, not bad at all. Luckily for us, Unreal Engine is not overly demanding.
When i get myself a decent gaming PC, this is the first game i’ll buy, even when i’ve already ordered it for my PS3
icezolation | January 18, 2013 3:17 am
As a long-term pc player, I’m always amused when there is stuff like controls or graphic options that get exclusively announced. Because it SHOULD be common practice…
srift | January 19, 2013 9:34 pm
Using the HD textures with Direct X 11
Will the Nvidia GTX 660ti run the game over 40 frames?
I wasnt sure if the recommended specs take into account the HD textures?
Can’t wait!!!

Pre ordered my Ultimate Songbird Edition for PC 2 days ago at gamestop. was kinda surprised to still see that edition still available in stores but i got mine! i have an nvidia geforce gtx 550ti msi cyclone overclocked to over 1k ghz. ill be just fine but will soon be upgrading to the 660ti
slakr4life365 | January 21, 2013 7:01 am
@srift, you should run it no problem. me, im getting the 660ti from msi with frozr 2 cooling. they are just simply amazing graphics cards. i own the 550ti msi cyclone and im not worried at all about these graphics
srift | January 24, 2013 12:45 am
Ah cool. Well I decided to get the game on PS3 because buying a new computer just for one game doesn’t justify it enough…even though it is Bioshock. I am a little annoyed they haven’t listed the differences for both console versions. I mean it would be nice to know. At least what the additions would be. I already got the Bioshock game so no point bringing that up 😉
thetravman | January 26, 2013 12:21 pm
I was greatly looking forward to the announcement of Infinite’s PC Specifications. Now that i have them, I’m even more excited for it! Thank you, Irrational for making such great games!
chris2c2 | February 3, 2013 8:16 pm
These specs make me so happy, but as a disabled gamer who uses a 360 controller on my PC, I have to ask: You said that the controls are customizable for mouse/keyboard, but does that carry over to controllers too? I’m buying it on PC regardless, I’m just curious.
denisfdrv | March 14, 2013 8:33 am
Sounds good on paper. One thing is missing for me: what about the UI hide/opacity options? Judging by released videos, this game has high contrast UI elements always present on screen which is bad for plasma TVs because it will cause heavy image retention. Have you though about that and are you going to implement UI options (opacity is the best solution IMO)?
sniperx1989 | March 21, 2013 7:20 pm
my pc has Asrock X79 Extreme4 mobo
I7-3820
16gb of G.skill Ripjaws DDR 1066
EVGA GTX 660 TI 3gb
Water cooling
2 Spin-Point F4’s in raid 0
so i hope my system can run it on the highest settings
