Ten Things You Should Know About BioShock Infinite: Day 4

on September 14 2010

The world of BioShock Infinite is situated in a crucial era of American history, when a young and troubled nation was fast becoming a major player on the world stage.

In the latter parts of the 19th century, the United States was still reeling from tragedies like the Civil War and President Lincoln’s assassination. But as the turn of the century approached, the agrarian society transformed. Immigration and industrial production skyrocketed, and victory in the Spanish-American War catalyzed an international influence that continues to this day. Told in 1898 that they could soon be living above the clouds, many Americans would not have blinked.

It is that society’s optimism, drive, and ingenuity–not to mention its fears and prejudices–that underpin BioShock Infinite‘s airborne city of Columbia and all the secrets it contains.

This is the fourth in a series of short posts about BioShock Infinite being released one a day until the unveiling of its first gameplay demonstration video, which will go live September 21 on Xbox LIVE and Xbox.com, and September 22 elsewhere.

I posted in in the forums, but I found this great link to a bunch of German postcards from the 1900s depicting what they predicted the year 2000 would be like. Nearly all of the transport and inventions involve hot air balloons of some kind, which really gives you an idea of how popular the idea was.

Those are amazing; I really like artistic depictions of the “future” made centuries ago. They were so hopeful that we’d have balloon/canoe shoes by now, rather than having to use stupid boring bridges.

As Bioshock seemed to me to take a lot from Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” will this one continue with the Ayn Rand route mixed in with a spice of Erik Larson’s “A Devil in the White City”? Maybe even a touch of Wizard of OZ? ( Big Daddy looking character with the heart – Tin Man?)

I’m really excited to see the use of the United States’ views in the early 1900s-especially considering the education system has pounded into my head far more about the United States than any other part of the world(that, and I’ve learned outside more about it, too). I’m curious to see if there will be any serious implement into the storyline of the country’s nationalism, imperialism, common, racist belief Manifest Destiny, (less likely to be used as it was agreed with somewhat less commonly than the other ideas) Social Darwinism, etc. etc. The trailer and gameplay demo suggested all but the imperialism from what I could tell-though the anti-immigrants bit’s also awesome. :]
