Ken Levine, Creative Director here at Irrational Games, talks “From Shodan, to Big Daddy, to Elizabeth: The Evolution of AI Companions” with Simon Parkin. This discussion also features an audience Q&A about various topics and of course BioShock Infinite, sequel to the 2007 BAFTA-winning BioShock.

I’m so glad this was filmed. Sheds light on quite a few interesting topics. Right off the bat, I wonder how many gamers today realize just how fluid game design is? Because the industry has grown so large, they think it’s an assembly line. But just look at how Ken describes being able to add features and broaden the scope of things based on publisher support. You may start with one core idea or focus, but you have to be nimble and respond to changing resources by being willing to pull back or push forward. That may be one of the abilities that separates a good dev house from a great one. Thoughtful, efficient use of changing resources.

Agreed Japester – the whole thing was really interesting. So great to have the opportunity to hear about the evolution of the craft and so on. I tell ya, my man crush on Ken just seems to grow over time 😛

I’m starting to get very excited…about the game (just to clarify)!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Irrational Games proves that video games are a form of art like any other. The world of game designers is a world as magical as Columbia herself.

Kudos to the whole irrational team for not settling for anything but perfection.

Wow, I just realized that’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” is playing on the beach at 36:53… likely a choice made based on how much work Ken said the team did trying to get Liz right on the beach..
