Over the past ten days we’ve been counting down to the first public release of BioShock Infinite gameplay footage. That ten-minute demonstration video is now showing on Xbox Live. Tomorrow, it will be released here on IrrationalGames.com and across the web.
Here’s a recap of the past week and a half of crucial BioShock Infinite information. Keep it in mind as you watch the gameplay demonstration, and you’ll have a deeper understanding about what you’re seeing and how the world of Columbia works:
- Columbia is a living, breathing society whose citizens will respond to you in diverse–and unpredictable–ways.
- In BioShock Infinite, you play a defined, fleshed-out character: former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt.
- Your companion character Elizabeth aids you in combat–but only if and when you want her to.
- BioShock Infinite is set during a formative time in American history, as the country was exploding onto the world stage.
- Sky-Lines can be used for both movement and combat, significantly expanding your tactical opportunities.
- Combat can involve many enemies at one time, with a much broader range of encounters than the original BioShock.
- BioShock Infinite is built on a new engine, with none of Irrational’s code or assets from previous BioShock games remaining.
- Irrational sees “BioShock” as more than just one setting–and the implications of that will become more and more clear over time.
- Columbia is composed of semi-autonomous floating buildings which have a wealth of unique gameplay properties.
- Two factions battle for control over Columbia, the status quo-enforcing powers that be, and the internationalist Vox Populi.

I think that BioShock Infinite is going to revolutionize first person shooters like the way Half-life and Halo did. Truly revolutionary stuff.
timogul | September 22, 2010 10:07 am
The gameplay video was fantastic, a lot of the power uses seemed to be a lot of fun, the environmental and effects work was gorgeous, and the pacing seemed fun too. It did make me worried a bit by how “staged” everything seemed, in that everything happened a bit like a movie scene, right on cue, and the player was reacting in exactly the “right” way to continue the narrative without getting whomped for his efforts, almost Dragonslayer style.
My worry is what would happen if I, as a player, were to behave differently, for example taking my time wandering around an area more than in the video, or attacking people recklessly, or things like that.
Was it truly a person sitting down and playing that scene, or was it like a machinema using the gameplay engine and techniques to simulate what the final game will be like? If it truly was actual direct gameplay, I’d love to see a second play-through using different timing and tactics, just to see how differently things could turn out within that same scenario.
I still think it looks great either way, and Bioshock does have a distory of having great “set pieces” within the game, I just hope that it preserves a certain level of freedom and versatility, rather than being “on rails” (Skyline aside) and only giving the player the choice in what weapons to use and whether they’re aimed correctly or not.
Btw, does Elizabeth get a power-up mid-game where she loses the corset and is able to breathe normally again? 😉

I guess since the floating buildings are ‘semi-autonomous’ and there are two warring factions, that certain factions control different sections of town–hence why in the gameplay trailers, one of the buildings topples over (sabotage!).

adamcaverhil | September 24, 2010 12:31 pm
Man, I’d love to love this game, you’ve gone through a lot of effort to make sure I do, there’s just one problem.
You didn’t plan this game from the beginning, and it shows. This game flies right in the face of everything the previous games were, one was an amazing piece of work, story, plot, setting. The tone was so simply amazing that it was a game difficult not to love. The second, dropped down a few notches, oh sure the gameplay was leaps and bounds better, there were a few key scenes that were simply incredible, but it was tacked on. The problem is, I can’t help but feel the only reason this game exists is because somewhere, someone decided “Hey, Bioshock made a lot of money, Bioshock 2 made a lot of money, let’s make some more money.”
If I didn’t know any better, I’d suggest Kotick.
None the less, this game will undoubtedly be amazing, I will do nothing but enjoy how pretty it is, how grand the setting is and the design. I just have a few moral qualms.
joshuadesimone | September 24, 2010 12:58 pm
I think it’s hard to believe that completely. For one, this game went into the planning stages shortly after Bioshock was released and before Bioshock 2 was even started. Not just that, but Bioshock 2 was 2k’s decision, not IG’s, and Ken even says in an interview he doesn’t really approve of what they did with it. 2k Marin is the team that “cashed in” on the sequel, not IG.
At the end of the day, this is IG’s IP, not 2k’s/Take 2’s, and they can do with it what they wish.
Personally, I think this game is going to outdo the original on almost every front. Bioshock will always be one of a kind, but this is a sequel that looks like what other developers should aim for; something that shares and honors the universe and gameplay aspects of the namesake, but actually contributes something new and fresh.

Here’s the one thing I want to know about Bioshock Infinite: will the PC version maintain the atrocious PC interface of Bioshock 2, or will it harken back to the smooth PC interface of the original?
But wait, you say — didn’t both games have the same PC interface? No! In Bioshock 2, you are forced to “dual wield” weapons and plasmids simultaneously. The problem with this mechanism on the PC is that the mouse wheel can only be used to cycle through plasmids OR weapons, but not both. The only way to cycle through the other is by using the keyboard, and the problem with THAT option is that it takes your fingers off the WASD keys (or in my case, being a lefty, off the number pad). Thus, you cannot move and switch weapons at the same time — a major problem in Bioshock 2 for PC! This problem was not present in the original because you could only have weapons OR plasmids equipped at the same time.
I suggest that the PC version of Bioshock Infinite return to this mechanic, as the Bioshock 2 interface is totally unworkable for PC gamers.

But I hope we will be returning to Rapture in the future…
adamchan | October 5, 2010 9:33 am
Wow…I just saw the gameplay trailer on yahoo-games and thought it was a rip off. I mean, rapture was a dark old fashion place, and thats wat I think when it comes 2 bioshock but this air born carnival area is just too light and happy looking. I always thought there was going 2 b a new rapture kinda place cause delta sunk the original. But I think they should at least make it look a bit more like rapture cause now I just seems like a whole new game. I think handyman is kinda right tho, we should have like another story based in rapture. Maybe they can call the next 1 bioshock legends. Yea that sounds good 😛
adamchan | October 5, 2010 9:42 am
1 more thing tho is that the new big daddys look like something of transformers and I have no idea wat they’re going 2 use instead of adam and little sisters. the only 1 thing I can think off is birds instead of the adam slugs. But just the idea of ripping out a bird from a little girls chest makes me think it’s just not going 2 happen.

one things you should know Bio Shick 2 was a crime against the consumer. The coding of the game was one of the poorest i have ever seen. the support from 2k was oustanding, oustandling poor. Shamefull, They left so many people hanging dry, with out a care, it was a crime. Lets hope there new tatic of not mentioning BS 2 in any marketing will not work. 99% of all PC BS2 owners will tell remeber how disapointed they where at such a short game and the worst ever MP experiance ever.
